Selection Procedure
Here’s a detailed explanation of each stage of the SSC GD Constable 2024 selection process:
Written Examination (Computer-Based Test - CBT)
The first stage of the selection process is the Computer-Based Test (CBT), which is conducted online.
In 2022, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) introduced changes to the exam pattern for the SSC GD Constable Computer-Based Exam (CBE). Below is the revised exam pattern based on your provided details:
Part | Subject | Number of Questions | Maximum Marks |
---|---|---|---|
Part A | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 20 | 40 |
Part B | General Knowledge and General Awareness | 20 | 40 |
Part C | Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
Part D | English/Hindi | 20 | 40 |
Total | 80 | 160 |
- Number of Questions: A total of 80 questions divided into 4 sections (each section has 20 questions).
- Total Marks: The exam now carries 160 marks in total, with each question carrying 2 marks.
- Negative Marking: The SSC introduced negative marking for incorrect answers. 0.50 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.
Syllabus
- General Intelligence & Reasoning: Questions on analogies, similarities, differences, spatial orientation, problem-solving, and arithmetic reasoning.
- General Knowledge & Awareness: Questions on current events, history, geography, culture, sports, Indian Constitution, and general policies.
- Elementary Mathematics: Basic arithmetic including number systems, averages, percentages, time and work, profit and loss, and algebra.
- English/Hindi: Basic comprehension and grammar, including vocabulary, sentence structure, and synonyms/antonyms.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Once candidates qualify for the written exam, they undergo the Physical Efficiency Test (PET). This test assesses the physical fitness and endurance of the candidates through a series of physical tasks.
Criteria | Male Candidates | Female Candidates |
---|---|---|
Race (General Areas) | 5 km in 24 minutes | 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds |
Race (Hilly Areas) | 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds | 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds |
Candidates are required to complete the race within the specified time limits to qualify for the next stage.
Physical Standard Test (PST)
The Physical Standard Test (PST) assesses whether the candidates meet the required physical standards set by the SSC for the GD Constable post. The measurements include height and chest (for males) as specified below:
Criteria | Male Candidates | Female Candidates |
---|---|---|
Height | Minimum 170 cm | Minimum 157 cm |
(Relaxation for certain categories) | (Relaxation for certain categories) | |
Chest | Unexpanded: Minimum 80 cm | Not applicable |
Expanded: Minimum 85 cm | ||
(5 cm expansion required) |
Medical Examination
Candidates who clear the PET and PST stages are called for the Medical Examination to ensure they are medically fit for the post. The test includes:
Key Medical Standards:
- Eyesight: Minimum vision standards are required, typically:
- Distant Vision: 6/6 or 6/9 (for both eyes)
- Near Vision: N6/N9 (with or without glasses)
- General Health: The candidate should be in good mental and physical health, free from any deformity, disease, or disability that may hinder their job performance.
- Tattoo Policy: Tattoos on certain parts of the body, especially visible areas, may be disallowed, depending on government policies.
Final Selection
After clearing all stages, a merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in the Computer-Based Test and their fitness in the Physical and Medical Tests. The final appointment will depend on the candidate’s ranking in the merit list and the number of vacancies available.
This multistep process ensures that the candidates selected for SSC GD Constable roles are not only intellectually capable but also physically fit for the challenging tasks in the paramilitary and security forces.
Pay Scale (Salary)
The Pay Scale for the SSC GD Constable is based on Pay Level-3 under the 7th Pay Commission of India. This pay scale defines the basic salary as well as the additional allowances and benefits offered to the selected candidates. Here’s a breakdown:
Pay Level-3: Rs 21,700 - Rs 69,100
- Basic Pay: The starting basic pay for an SSC GD Constable is Rs 21,700. This amount increases with years of service and promotions, and the maximum basic pay can go up to Rs 69,100.
- Allowances: In addition to the basic pay, the GD Constables are entitled to various allowances, which further increase their overall salary. These allowances include:
- Dearness Allowance (DA): This is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to government employees. It is revised twice a year (in January and July) and is a percentage of the basic pay.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): HRA is given to employees to cover rental expenses, and the rate depends on the city of posting:
- X Class Cities (Metro): 27% of the basic pay
- Y Class Cities: 18% of the basic pay
- Z Class Cities: 9% of the basic pay
- Transport Allowance (TA): This allowance helps cover travel expenses to and from the workplace. The rate depends on the city and can vary.
- Ration Money Allowance: For paramilitary forces, GD constables receive ration money to cover food expenses, as they are often deployed in remote or field areas.
- Other Special Allowances: Based on the nature of duties and risk involved (e.g., for field postings or special missions), they may receive additional allowances like hardship allowance, special duty allowance, or risk allowance.
- In-Hand Salary: After including all allowances and deducting applicable taxes and provident fund contributions, the in-hand salary for a newly recruited GD Constable generally ranges between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000 per month, depending on the location of posting and applicable allowances.
- Career Growth and Salary Increments: As GD Constables gain more years of experience, they can be promoted to higher ranks such as Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Sub-Inspector (SI), and beyond, with corresponding increases in pay and allowances.
- Benefits: In addition to the salary and allowances, GD Constables are entitled to several other benefits:
- Pension benefits under the National Pension Scheme (NPS).
- Medical facilities for themselves and their families.
- Gratuity, insurance, and retirement benefits as per government rules.
